A student-run
rover team.

SSRT was founded in 2019 to give students a place to work on an engineering project together. Members take part in the whole process, from an initial design to manufacturing, programming and testing.

We compete at CIRC in Drumheller, where university teams test their rovers on tasks such as terrain traversal, search and rescue, and control panel manipulation.

What we work on.

01

Mechanical Rover

Chassis, suspension and enclosure design, along with prototyping, fabrication and integration with other divisions.

02

Mechanical Arm

Arm mechanisms, gear reduction and manufacturing. This year’s work includes exploring a lighter design with stepper motors.

03

Power

Batteries, power distribution PCBs, enclosure wiring and electrical safety, including fuses and kill-switch circuits.

04

Controls Electrical

Motor controllers, motor wiring and microcontroller programming. The team is working toward custom controllers built in-house.

05

Controls Software

Rover and arm control, motor calibration, PID tuning, inverse kinematics and sensor integration.

06

Software

Telemetry, live camera feeds, networking and wireless communication, along with the operator interface and backend.

07

Science

Soil collection tools and experiments, including research, testing and reports for the science challenge.

08

Business

Sponsorship, outreach, communications, finance and events. Business members also look after social media, the website and merchandise.

What we’re working on.

This year, we’re improving the current rover: developing the next arm, designing in-house motor controller PCBs, updating the software control panel and reorganizing the enclosure.

We also want to finish division tasks earlier so there is more time to test everything together. Longer-term plans include a rocker-bogie suspension for rough terrain.
